Manager - Microbiology/Molecular Department
Schedule: 40 hours weekly, Full time, Day shift primarily. Responsible for staff 24/7.
Nationally recognized commercial reference laboratory that provides testing services for physicians and hospitals within a four-state region. Provides services for multiple hospitals in the Oklahoma region and several satellite locations in Tulsa, northeastern and central Oklahoma, and southeastern Kansas. The system performs more than 9 million laboratory procedures per year.
Manages, plans, organizes, and evaluates the daily operation, staff, and quality control of the microbiology/molecular laboratory. Provides leadership and implements measures to provide effective laboratory laboratory operations including accountabilities for quality of care, quality of work product, cost effectiveness, efficiency, safety, and achievement of department objectives.
Monitors laboratory work to ensure established technical quality standards are in compliance. Ensures departmental compliance with all regulatory requirements including CAP, CLIA, OSHA, and CMS.
Manages assigned staff. Sets daily priorities for and delegates work assignments to ensure scheduled staff hours provide adequate coverage at all times to meet operational needs. Evaluates performance and ensures appraisals and training requirements are completed on a timely basis. Resolves day to day operational problems related to system, personnel, equipment performance, and supply chain issues.
Motivates a high performing team to meet the current and evolving needs of the laboratory through effective employee selection, training and development, coaching, mentoring, and performance management to ensure exemplary, fair and consistent standards with a focus on providing laboratory results at all times through a patient-focused lens.
Monitors the section operating and capital budgets. Determines and justifies needs for equipment purchases. Develops and manages operation and business objectives to ensure that the laboratory is operating efficiently with high quality and service levels while maintaining accreditation standards.
Maintains technical expertise for the area of responsibility. Provides employees with guidance in handling difficult or complex problems. Oversees implementation of new methodologies and instrumentation in keeping with technological advances in laboratory medicine.
Develops specific departmental goals, standards, and objectives which support the laboratory strategic plan and vision of the organization, including Quality Improvement goals and measures.
Collaborates and effectively communicates with team members, clients and other service line departments.
Performs related duties as required.
Work Experience:
6 years of experience in laboratory setting / Microbiology experience required
3-5 years of leadership or management experience
Education:
Bachelor's degree in medical technology, medical laboratory scientist, biological sciences or education qualifications as stated per CLIA requirements (minimum requirement)
Master's degree preferred or Ph.D. ABMM certified Medical Microbiologist
